Political action committee formed to keep red light cameras

American Traffic Solutions formed a PAC to try and sway the vote to keep the red light cameras here in College Station. You can bet their motives are not for the safety of the citizens of College Station, but for their profit margins and bottom line.

I'm against people running red lights, but the red light cameras are about revenue and the government over intruding into our lives. If you are against the red light cameras, and are a resident of College Station, make sure you are registered to vote, and go and vote against these cameras in November.

I just visited their website. These people don't really care about College Station. They care about losing revenue.

Anyways, having these cameras don't magically stop red light runners. Most red light accidents occur because the runner never even sees the red light.

Also, isn't startling to anyone else that the government is declaring you guilty before you have a chance to plead your case? Wake up people! This is about our liberties being taking away, wrapped up in a 'public safety' package.

Why don't we just outlaw private transportation all together, or make the speed limit 10 mph everywhere. That will reduce wrecks and vehicle fatalities.

yes they are declaring you guilty without a plea. you know why because you are! hence the photo. in the photos that are taken you can clearly see the light, the intersection and you're vehicle. its not like they photoshop your car into the pic. if you are in the intersection after the light is red you are guilty. doesn't matter if you tried to outrun the yellow, didn't notice it was red, etc. those are all just excuses. you did it, they have the proof, you're guilty. now you can still go down and try to plea at the courthouse so they can send you to traffic school or give you a reduced fine if its your first offense. but quit complaining about it. ive been caught before and yeah it sucks but i did something wrong and i paid the fine. now i am more cautious in watching the lights and using the crosswalk signal to tell. that's what theyr'e hoping for... using it as a deterrent to keep you from wanting to run it and risking dangerous driving.

  Busted in College Station -

Let me say first, I think people should obey the law and NOT run red lights, but there are extenuating circumstances. On the way to the hospital. What if the lights are stuck, like they often do at night (esp. at Harvey and 6). Plus many other possible reasons.

Here is something else probably no one has thought of. What if you sell your car? It takes the state several weeks to transfer ownership. If that new owner runs the red light - guess what... you get the ticket. And yes, you probably can get it dismissed, but with a lot of time and trouble becauses you were guilty without chance of a fair trial, or getting to explain your side. Our whole American society is base on innocence until proven guilty.

This happened to me in Houston with the toll way (I traded in my car here in BCS). Someone who bought the car I traded in ran through the EZ tag lane with no EZ tag multiple times. I got the fines in the mail. It is so hard to get it reversed, they are still in my name.

Again, this is just too much on a nanny state for me. But let the people decide in a vote. If the majority wants red light cameras, the so be it - the people would have spoken.

the fine goes to the owner of the car registered on the LICENSE PLATE! when you trade in a car u keep your plates. when the picture is taken it doesn't take a pic of the VIN number and trace it back to the owner. it gets the car and the license plate. then someone looks up the plate sees who the car is registered to and then sends a ticket. the only valid argument to receiving a ticket you didn't get would be if you let a friend use your car and he ran a red light. in which case you are still screwed cause you are responsible for your vehicle. that's why an insurance agent will always tell you not to lend your car to anybody cause in the event of an accident you are liable for your vehicle and who you let operate

  Annoyed at Stupidity,
So where should it stop. If someone breaks into your house and steals your rifle while your on vacation, and then commits a crime or murders someone with it - is that your responsibility too, after all its registered in your name.

now your just talking to talk. having something stolen and letting someone use something are two totally different things. if someone stole your car and joyrode around town and accrued a bunch of tickets thats totally different than letting a friend use your car. and if thats all you got out of the previous post than you obviously werent paying attention.

You are right stupidity, it's not the same - but you should not have to be responsible for anyone else's action, period.

Aside from that, it's just chilling thinking that a government entity has the power to sue a private citizen. That's what is happening here. That's why it doesn't appear on your driving record. It's not a driving citation, it's a civil judgement against you compliments of your government, implimented by a private company.

Again, I will say, no one should run red lights, it is illegal and can cause serious accidents. But government is gaining too much control and overstepping bounds under the guise of safety and public good.
